The Drunkard’s Path: Self-Help and Guidance for Your Career
Barry has worked with thousands of employees in the hospitality, service, recreation, and restaurant business sectors. By the age of 20, he was promoted to his first management position. Throughout his working career he has always strived to be learning something new and always worked to create an environment that both employees and customers can enjoy.
Barry began to actively study business in the late 1990’s with the hope of improving his financial position and to allow him to create more freedom in the operation of his businesses. Those studies led him to begin writing about his ideas and philosophies on running a business to deepen his own knowledge and to share with his other partners, employees, and other business owners. This also allowed him to communicate more effectively and led to writing his book.
“Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Barry offers great insights into a functional workplace and the development of one’s career. I’ll be quoting this in my Entrepreneurship class!”
~ Bill Moylan, Visiting ant Professor, Eastern Connecticut State University
Throughout this book you will find many different ideas, but there are three core philosophies that underlie and support everything in this book. They are:
● We work primarily for ourselves and the future we are working to produce.
● We live in a linguistic reality in which we co-create everything with our words.
● Selfish-Altruism can be an effective practice for developing a career.
We all work for ourselves. To think that you work for someone else sets you up for substandard work performance, slacking, and poor excuses. My employees do not work for me. They work in a space that I helped build and that we all co-create together every day. But they are working to build knowledge, identity, and trust, along with an increased value in their own future. They are working for themselves and a more valuable self in the future.
“The Drunkard’s Path is an inspiring and valuable book that is packed with stories, insights, and practical tips and tools for how to live a productive and fulfilling life doing what you love to do. Barry has an authentic and genuine intention to make a positive impact on the world by way of his restaurants, his leadership, and by spreading the lessons he has learned from his success in the hospitality industry. He has succeeded in one of the most challenging industries, and he has also created impactful ways to create learning, growth, and success within his teams. Barry brings his decades of insight, education, and experience as a restaurateur and entrepreneur to this book and shows us how to live, love, and create in a way that has a positive impact and brings people joy.”

As Don Miguel Ruiz states in his book The Four Agreements, “Be impeccable with you word.” The reason for this, is that it is through our daily use of language, our words, that we co-create our shared realities and the world we know. Understanding this and working from this idea allows for more control over the direction of your life.
Selfish-Altruism simply states: ‘I am doing this for me and the life I want to create, but many other people will benefit from my actions.’ By taking care of myself, I take care of others. That is how I run a business. I do it for me, but my employees, customers, and community benefit.
From those three main points, Barry leads the reader from employment to management and beyond, with ideas and concepts on how to become a more valuable employee while creating a rewarding work career and a more meaningful life. In doing so, he creates the groundwork for entrepreneurial thinking and a future with many more possibilities.
“The author effectively communicates how to think like an entrepreneur and in essence chart your own course. This book is not just a self-help guide for your career, but also one that reinforces the attitude and skills needed for a successful life. Chapters are short, easy to follow, and humorous and I’ve already found myself going back to re-read many of them. I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t benefit from reading this book.”
